Why Does the Bitcoin Halving Matter?

The Bitcoin halving is a programmed event that cuts the block reward — the new BTC paid to miners per block — in half every 210,000 blocks (approximately every 4 years). This reduces the rate of new Bitcoin entering circulation, creating a supply shock that has historically preceded major bull markets.

The halving continues until all 21 million Bitcoin are mined (around year 2140). After that, miners will only earn transaction fees. The predictability of this schedule is one of Bitcoin's most powerful properties as a deflationary store of value.
